Artista sensible, por ancestro materno. El abuelo y el tío, Manuel y Wenceslao Argüello, pintaron óleos y tallaron piedras semipreciosas.
José Crisanto Badilla Argüello, de niño, se identificó con la tradición escultórica herediana: de Fadrique, de los imagineros Zamora, Valerio y Ramos y de Juan Rafael Chacón.
Nació en Heredia el 1 de marzo de 1941. Introvertido liceísta, ¿quién se habría atrevido a pronosticar al escultor, que cuando ya nutría su inquietante pasión por el arte en la consulta diaria de tratado de dibujo de Andrew Loomis? Ya bachiller, ingresó a la Academia de Bellas Artes de la Universidad de Costa Rica. En 1971 coronó su carrera de Licenciado en Artes Plástica, con especialidad en escultura.
Ya como estudiante hace suyo el sentimiento de dación en arte. Expone en varias muestras colectivas, entre ellas: Primera y Segunda Semanas del artista Herediano, 1968 y 1970; en Galería Forma, 1970, con Carlomagno Venegas y Edgar Ugalde; en la Muestra artística en honor a Juan Rafael Chacón, el 15 de setiembre de 1972.
Púber, incursionó en tratados de dibujo. Ahora, es un autodidacto curioso que capta en el tratado de escultura de William Zorach “consejos y explicaciones técnicas, tan precisos y claros que sólo un verdadero maestro es capaz de dar” – según manifiesta recalcando que esta “información es tan necesaria a la vez difícil de obtener para el que se inicia, ya sea por ignorancia o por egoísmo de gente pequeña”. Comprueba lo que ahí encuentra y redescubre en el granito y la madera.
En la actualidad, Crisanto Badilla esculpe mármoles, granitos y mollejones para presentarlos en exposiciones individuales. Hombre de entendimiento, hiende la naturaleza en su esencia y, con ahondamiento de artista, la representa con sustancialidad estética.
